Nottingham Forest goal hero Ryan Yates threw his name into contention to play at Derby on Friday and then slammed the club’s league position as ’embarrassing’.
Yates started a game for the first time since returning from a calf strain, helping himself to the winning goal in the second half.
He fired home after a scramble in the penalty area to give Forest a massive three points in their quest for survival.
Afterwards, he was interviewed by Sky Sports and commented on Hughton’s management style – and also on how there is still work to do.
Yates said: “I think we had the better chances and deserved to win the game.
“The gaffer wants us to improve every single day. He doesn’t let us get too high, or too low.
“We’ll be disappointed with that performance tonight, we didn’t really play that well but it’s about winning games, especially when we’re down near the bottom.
“It’s embarrassing that Nottingham Forest are near the bottom of the table so we need to put that right.”
Will Yates win a shirt for Friday?
It has to be said that it seems unlikely.
The Forest midfielder scored last night but the team does lose a bit of a spark when he plays.
James Garner has been in fine form and Hughton’s decision not to play him at Rotherham surely makes him a certainty to play Friday.
Alongside Cafu the duo have thrived just lately and Hughton has a big decision to make.
Being a Nottingham-born player, Yates will be desperate to play at Pride Park.
The Forest boss will have to decide what is best for his team though and he mentioned in his post-match chat with Sky that he wasn’t happy with how the Reds moved the ball.
Garner could be chosen alongside Yates but it would represent an untried combination for a game of such epic proportion.
After Yates’ winning goal it’ll be interesting to see what Hughton decides in two days time.
