Nottingham Forest wanted to sign Lens midfielder Cheick Doucoure but the player is now set to sign for Crystal Palace.

According to The Guardian, the central midfield player is set to complete an £18 million move to the London-based outfit.

Arsenal and Forest were clubs cited with a late interest in securing the services of the 22-year-old who looks set for a bright future.

Doucoure typically operated in the holding role in midfield. During 2021/22, he scored once and claimed four assists as Lens finished seventh in Ligue 1.

The Reds are desperately trying to bolster their squad. They’ve added Taiwo Awoniyi since returning to the Premier League and a wave of signings is expected.

Doucourse would have represented a pretty shrewd signing from a Forest perspective.

He moves the ball well, is strong in the tackle and at 22, has his best years firmly ahead of him.

The youngster is a product of the Lens academy and in total, he’s made 131 appearances for the club that nurtured him as a player.

Teammate Seko Fofana is a huge admirer of Doucoure and offered some praise for the player back in February.

He told Le Quotidien Du Sport that he’s ‘incredible’, ‘complete’ and ‘very important’ during the interview and Doucoure looks like a real player.

Naturally, the proof will be in the pudding when it comes to the Premier League.

Under the influence of Patrick Vieira, he could thrive and Palace look to have got themselves an exceptional talent.

The Malian is another name to scrub off the list.

One thing that the Doucoure chase does show, however, is that Forest are showing some ambition.

Evangelos Marinakis has said he will bankroll an ambitious Premier League campaign and it seems the Reds are shopping at the right markets.

Naturally, a couple more signings would have been nice by now.

The Reds head to Spain next week and Steve Cooper will want as many new faces through the door as quickly as possible.

Doucoure would have been a wonderful signing but Forest must quickly move on to their next transfer target.
