Nottingham Forest are interested in signing Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen, according to Dutch news outlet FR12.
It seemed last week as though the Blues youngster would join Feyenoord in his homeland but not other parties are keen.
The Reds have been joined in the race by Burnley; with the talented left-back set to leave Stamford Bridge again this summer.
Maatsen spent last season on loan at Coventry City. There, he made 42 appearances, scoring three goals and claiming one assist under Mark Robins.
The Sky Blues look to have moved on and they’re not thought to be in the mix to sign him once again.
Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has indirectly offered the Dutchman an indication of where his future lies; and it’s not in West London.
The 20-year-old has been left out of the Chelsea squad that has headed to the USA for a pre-season training camp.
Instead, he’s training with the club’s younger players at Cobham and last week a move to Feyenoord looked to be close.
Now, English interest has emerged and it’s claimed the player would welcome the chance to stay in this country.
Forest have already signed Omar Richards to fill the space at left-wing-back but another will be sought.
Huddersfield star Harry Toffolo is on the radar and perhaps he’s more likely to arrive at the City Ground than Maatsen.
Burnley are also showing ambition. They were relegated from the Premier League last term and Vincent Kompany will want an instant return.
Forest interested in Maatsen but deal seems unlikely
The Reds are seemingly some way down the line over a deal for Toffolo. If he signs, there is no way that another left-sided wing-back will check in.
As a result, this does perhaps look like a fallback option just in case, Forest can’t do something to sign Toffolo.
Maatsen is a decent player, however. He was useful in the Championship last year and looks like someone with a bright future.
Rumour rating: 3/10 – This one is scored low but it’s nothing do with the player’s quality.
It’s more to do with the reliability of the link and this looks like an outlet putting two and two together to get five.
Right now, it’s common knowledge that Forest want another full-back and this seems like an easy player to link with the club.
If a deal for Toffolo doesn’t come off then Maatsen would be a useful option but right now, we just don’t think it’s very likely.
