Nottingham Forest are one of several clubs eyeing a loan move for Manchester City gem James McAtee, according to the Daily Mail. Leeds, Bournemouth and Villarreal are also in the mix to sign the player who has been compared to David Silva.
The 19-year-old needs regular football and is unlikely to feature under Pep Guardiola next season. One of the factors that City will look at when choosing where to send him will be regular action for McAtee during 2022/23.
Typically a number 10, McAtee made his senior debut in September. He came off the bench during a 6-1 win over Wycombe in the Carabao Cup and made six appearances for the Citizens during the 2021/22 campaign.
McAtee was a real force for the club’s under-23 outfit. He scored 18 goals in 23 appearances; including back-to-back hat-tricks against fierce rivals Manchester United and Blackburn at the start of the season.
The player affectionately nicknamed the ‘Salford Silva’ can operate anywhere through the middle. Over the last 12 months, he’s played as a central midfielder or behind the striker in a more natural number 10 position.
Guardiola had some words of praise and advice for McAtee last season. After his senior debut, he said: “Macca is quite calm and a guy who is in a good direction. But yes, he got minutes in the second half and he will play some more. He knows the rhythm. He has the quality but has to understand the position a bit better.”
Forest eyeing move for McAtee
This would be a decent addition for the Reds. Forest can take one more player on loan from a Premier League club having already signed goalkeeper Dean Henderson on a season-long deal from Manchester United.
The Reds desperately need some more attacking quality. Philip Zinckernagel and Lewis Grabban have gone from last year and the Reds are somewhat short in the number 10 role ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.
McAtee has the world at his feet. He’s one of the brightest prospects in the Premier League and he could become a regular at Manchester City in the future.
Rumour rating: 9/10 – Of course, this would only be a loan but what a temporary deal this could prove to be for Forest.
McAtee can fill a couple of positions and his work rate and energetic nature could help the Reds during their forthcoming Premier League campaign.
At 19, the Premier League starlet has bags of potential. With just one domestic top-flight loan available, this is definitely a deal Forest should look to do.
