Barcelona are considering rivalling Nottingham Forest for Alex Moreno, according to Estadio Deportivo. The Catalan giants will move for the 29-year-old if they can’t sign Marcos Alonso or Sergio Reguilon this summer.

Forest are still looking for more depth to their attack. Jesse Lingard and Taiwo Awoniyi have been added this summer but it’s fair to say that Steve Cooper would welcome more competition for places in the final third.

The Reds have struggled to score goals somewhat during pre-season. Brennan Johnson scored during Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Valencia but Forest won’t want to rely on him being the sole source of goals next season.

Moreno is an intriguing link. Last season he was the first choice left-sided wing-back for Real Betis. They finished fifth in La Liga and also claimed the title in the Copa del Rey, with the talented player featuring regularly.

The fact he can play in a number of positions makes it obvious why Forest want him. Steve Cooper loves to change his systems during matches and having versatile players makes that transition more seamless.

Moreno won’t come cheap this summer. Betis want £20 million for their star defender and given how well he played last season, that doesn’t really come as a huge surprise.

The Reds have splashed the cash this summer. The weekend signing of Orel Mangala took Forest’s spending spree to over £80 million.

This will certainly throw a spanner in the works of Forest’s latest transfer project. Efforts to sign Moreno were expected to be ramped up once Mangala signed but now there could be a problem.

Moreno will perhaps have a point to prove at the Nou Camp. He had a spell there as a youngster but didn’t make a first-team appearance for the club.

At 29 he will see his next move as one that he has to get right. Indeed, it would seem that this could be his last chance to earn a move to a club like Barcelona.

The player would be a useful signing for Forest. He’d likely play as an attacker for the Reds and it’s fair to say more quality is needed further forward.

Cooper will hope any talk of Barcelona is idle paper talk. If it proves to be, Forest have to act quickly if they want to secure Moreno this summer.
