Real Betis star Alex Moreno has rejected the chance to sign for Nottingham Forest this summer. A fee had been agreed, however, the player has had a change of heart and will remain in Seville.
Moreno was the subject of an accepted £9 million bid over the weekend. With a medical booked, however, the Reds have been left stunned with the player performing a remarkable u-turn.
The 29-year-old was set to become Forest’s 13th signing of the summer. He would have provided short-term competition for Harry Toffolo with Omar Richards.
Moreno can also play further forward. Last season he was a regular in the team and was the first choice left-sided wing-back as Betis finished fifth in La Liga and won the Copa del Rey.
The player confirmed his decision in a short statement on his official Instagram page. The translation stated: “Hello Beticos and Beticas, I want to share this message with you to tell you that Real Betis will continue to be my home this season.”
Moreno earns £22,000-a-week at Real Betis. As a result, the whole package would have likely represented very good value for money from a Forest perspective.
Forest will now go back to the drawing board. Another left-back will be required, although a player who can operate in a more advanced role may be sought.
Forest rejected by Moreno and now they must pursue other targets
It will be interesting to see who the Reds turn to next. They’ve spent weeks pursuing this target and the club will be hurt by Moreno’s decision not to sign.
Leaving Betis was clearly too much of a chore for the player. He’s a regular in the team there and clearly, he wasn’t particularly bothered about playing in the Premier League.
Moreno would have been a smart signing. He plays in more than one position, has top-level experience and ultimately he wouldn’t have cost a fortune.
Still, this isn’t the first time that Forest have endured a setback this summer. As a result, the recruitment team will remain undeterred in their quest to sign more players this summer.
