Manchester United have cooled their interest in Nottingham Forest-linked star Cody Gakpo, according to the Daily Mail. The Red Devils completed the £84 million deal for Ajax star Antony earlier today and their business could now be over.

Forest shouldn’t expect a free run at Gakpo though. Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has today made a £21 million bid to sign the Dutch wonderkid, with the first bid rejected.

Ruud van Nistelrooy does look resigned to losing the winger from his PSV ranks. The Dutch runners-up from last season failed to reach the group stages of the Champions League, losing to Rangers last week.

Gakpo has been the subject of a bid from Forest this summer. He had been keen to wait out for Manchester United and to see whether or not his current club reached the group stages of the greatest competition in club football.

Gakpo has made a blistering start to the 2022/23 campaign. He has scored four goals and claimed six assists from just eight games so far and it’s no surprise the 23-year-old is a wanted man.

Last season the player was in sensational form. He scored 21 goals and claimed 15 assists as PSV enjoyed a decent season in the Eredivisie. Naturally, it’s that form that has seen Premier League interest emerge.

It’s faith to say that this naturally helps Forest when it comes to trying to sin the youngster. United would have had significant clout to attract the player and Forest won’t have to worry about them now.

Southampton might prove an attractive option. It’s just a matter of whether or not they’d be willing to spend the £30 million that PSV are demanding for their star man.

Still, having signed Morgan Gibbs-White for a huge sum recently, perhaps Forest are also facing a bit of a losing battle when it comes to landing Gakpo.

Evangelos Marinakis has been supremely ambitious this summer though and very few would bet against him striking again when it comes to getting a deal for Gakpo over the line.
