Nottingham Forest made a deadline day bid to sign Aston Villa midfielder Marvelous Nakamba, according to Zimbabwean outlet The Herald.
The international midfielder has slipped out of contention for a place under Villa boss Steven Gerrard.
Forest and Fulham both made lucrative offers to the 28-year-old ahead of Thursday’s late deadline.
The Reds didn’t get a deal over the line, however, and now Steve Cooper’s squad is pretty much finalised.
Serge Aurier is set to become signing 22 of the summer but he is able to sign after the window due to him being a free agent.
Nakamba is now set to be the target of several European clubs, with the transfer windows in some countries still open.
The player signed for Villa in 2019 from Club Brugge but he’s not quite had the impact he would have hoped.
He’s made 68 appearances for Villa and hasn’t registered a goal contribution; although his qualities are more defence-minded.
It’s perhaps odd that Forest were targeting another midfielder before the transfer deadline.
The Reds have added several new faces to their engine room during the transfer window and another wouldn’t have made much sense.
Forest made deadline day bid for Nakamba
This one doesn’t appear to make a great deal of sense at all, given the Reds have a plethora of midfielders.
Steve Cooper has worked tirelessly this summer to get his squad assembled and he will be happy with the business done.
Now, the challenge of blending so many players together starts and it looks like an exciting time to be a supporter.
Nakamba doesn’t appear to be a bad player but it doesn’t really smack of a signing that made sense at the current time.
Forest were told that the £34,000-a-week Nakamba was only available on loan and it will be interesting to see what happens with him now.
