According to Chronicle Live, Newcastle are prepared to offload Colback in the summer as they look to trim their squad.

The report states that Colback currently earns £50k-a-week at St James’ Park and it seems unlikely that those demands will be met at the City Ground.

Nonetheless, the fact that Newcastle will sanction a departure must be music to Forest’s ears.

Colback was once called up to an England squad by Roy Hodgson but he was forced to withdraw through injury.

That sort of undoubted quality has been evident this season, with the combative performer captaining the side in recent weeks.

The 29-year-old has been a model of consistency in the Forest midfield and boss Martin O’Neill would be wise to build his team around Colback.

Having skippered the side of late there is a real possibility that he could sign permanently and become the regular captain next season.

Forest won’t stump up the £50k-a-week that he is paid at Newcastle.

The chance to become captain and continue playing regular football will surely mean more at this stage in his career.
