Nottingham Forest appointed Cooper as their latest manager in September 2021 on an initial contract until June 2023. He replaced Chris Hughton in charge at the City Ground as the Reds and Swansea City found an agreement on compensation after Cooper left the Jacks that July.

Cooper was still under contract with Swansea despite having left the team when Nottingham Forest chose to replace Hughton. The Reds were bottom of the Championship table with one win from eight games when Cooper arrived. Yet he sealed their promotion in his debut term.

Nottingham Forest handed Cooper a new contract in October 2022 to tie the manager down until June 2025. His fresh deal also removed a £1.5m release clause from the tactician’s terms.
