Nottingham Forest’s quality from set pieces has drastically improved at both ends of the pitch under Martin O’Neill.
But this has generated a mixed response from supporters. So why, after years of being bullied from set pieces, are some fans still not satisfied?
Well, it hasn’t been pretty at times. It’s quite a contrast to the possession-based style of football implemented by Aitor Karanka.

The Reds never looked like scoring from anything other than a set piece against Swansea City. Ultimately, Daryl Murphy and Molla Wague’s goals ensured that their manager avoided any major criticism after another unconvincing performance.
However, it’s a way for the Reds to still pick up three points, even when they aren’t at their best. This could yet make the difference in their push for the play-offs.

There’s no doubt that set pieces play a huge role in the Championship. Neil Warnock’s Cardiff City side made sure they took full advantage of them in their promotion to the Premier League last season. They so often make the difference in games.
For this reason, it’s comforting to see that the Reds have finally started to utilise them better. But, at the same time, it’s important to make sure that they don’t become their only avenue to goal.
