Nottingham Forest should consider a move for Millwall striker Lee Gregory this summer

Nottingham Forest will be looking to strengthen their striking options this summer, and Millwall’s Lee Gregory could be worth looking at.

The 30-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season, meaning he’d be available on a free transfer. The Lions have reportedly offered the striker a new contract, but he is yet to put pen to paper.

He may be tempted to move away from The Den after a successful five-year spell. There might not be another chance for him to make a big move.

Martin O’Neill will already have one eye on next season, despite the fact the Reds still have a slight chance of making the play-offs. There’s no doubt that improving his striking options will be high on his list of priorities.

It won’t be long until the Reds are linked with numerous summer targets. But if they do have an opportunity to sign Gregory on a free transfer, it would be a deal worth looking at.

He certainly ticks a lot of boxes.

The eight-goal striker has experience of playing in the Championship with the Lions. Not only this, but he has shown he can find the back of the net at this level, even in a team that isn’t competing at the top of the division.

Even when he isn’t at his best, he makes sure he is a nuisance to play against at the very least. He is the type of striker that the Reds haven’t really had at their disposal this season.

Risk

16-goal man Lewis Grabban has had an impressive first season on Trentside, but doesn’t offer the same energy as Gregory. Whilst Daryl Murphy provides physicality that neither Grabban or Gregory have at their disposal, there’s no doubt that Gregory would offer something different.

Speaking to South London Press about his future in November, Gregory said: “There’s been a few talks and stuff.

“I’m enjoying my football and I just want to get on with what I’m doing at the moment. I don’t want any distractions.

“There’s nothing affecting me at all. The club is happy with what I am doing and I’m happy at what the club is doing. We’re both in a good place.”

Of course, it would always be a risk to sign a 30-year-old striker, but on a free transfer, it may be a risk worth taking.
