Nottingham Forest could be set for an enthralling end to the Championship season, according to club legend Garry Birtles.

That was the message from the former two-time European Cup winner when he spoke to the Nottingham Post earlier this week.

Despite their failure to find any sort of consistency, the Reds find themselves sat just three points off the play-offs.

They are in a battle with Bristol City, Aston Villa, Derby County, Middlesbrough, Preston North End and Sheffield Wednesday for the final two spots in the top six.

There’s no doubt that they are the underdogs at this stage. But to still be in with a chance is a vast improvement to the last few years of battling against relegation.

Believe

For once it’s possible to get excited about potentially leaving the Championship for the Premier League, rather than fearing a drop into League One.

This is a key reason why Birtles believe that the Reds are in for an exciting end to the season. He told the Nottingham Post: “They’ve shown at stages this season that, on their day, they can match and beat anyone.

“If you look at the teams above them, they’ve either been or been in front against all of the teams, bar Bristol City, so it goes to show they certainly have the quality.

“They’re not too far away, and if the fans, who have been incredible this season, can be positive, stick with the manager and his players in the next month or so, you just never know what might happen.

“We’re in for an enthralling finale that is for sure.”

Martin O’Neill’s side will continue their quest to gatecrash the top six at the weekend against Rotherham United.

It certainly won’t be an easy game against the Millers who are fighting for their lives at the bottom of the division, but it’s one the Reds simply have to win if they have any aspirations of making the play-offs.
