Nottingham Forest were keen on signing Romain Saïss on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers last summer and he has since gone from strength to strength.

Reds supporters could be forgiven for feeling that they have missed out, with Saïss recently being named in WhoScored.com’s European Team of the Month.

After all, Saïss was heavily linked with a move to the City Ground last summer, mainly due to Jorge Mendes’ involvement with the club (Birmingham Mail). Now, less than a year on, he could be on the verge of starting an FA Cup semi-final.

Due to his recent performances, Nuno Espírito Santo may be tempted to draft him into his starting line-up at the weekend. His revival does come as a surprise considering the 29-year-old has only made 11 starts in the Premier League this season.

He has started to feature more regularly in the top flight after signing a new contract in February, as announced by the club’s official site. This came just a few days after a report in The Sun linked him with a move to La Liga giants Atlético Madrid.

But the likes of Rúben Neves, João Moutinho and Leander Dendoncker have consistently restricted Saïss to a place on the bench.

He may have a better chance of getting in the team in the long-term by playing in defence, at the expense of Ryan Bennett.

Fate

However, his recent performances don’t necessarily mean that the midfielder would’ve been a success at the City Ground.

Yes, he has impressed at Molineux over the last few months but the Premier League is a notably less physical league than the Championship.

Not only this, but the Reds were already well-stocked in his position. Aitor Karanka already had the likes of Jack Colback, Adlène Guedioura, Ryan Yates, Ben Watson and Liam Bridcutt.

Yet it probably wouldn’t have taken Saïss too long to prove his worth. After failing to land Saïss, the Reds picked up Claudio Yacob on a free transfer a few weeks later. The Argentinian has gone on to make 14 appearances. However, it’s fair to say Saïss may well have made a bigger impact.
