Nottingham Forest will be linked with several players during the summer months as Martin O’Neill looks to tweak his squad.

The Reds boss will hope to streamline his squad, whilst adding a few more bits of quality of his own in the process.

With over 30 professional players contracted for next season; the outgoing side of things is arguably more important than any new arrival.

It is vitally important that Forest get rid of the right players this summer.

An all too frequent occurrence on Trentside for a good decade has seen the club cash in on their better players. Sometimes on the cheap and often without a replacement of any sort being lined-up.

That trend must end this summer.

Joe Lolley will probably draw interest from Aston Villa following their promotion to the Premier League on Monday.

A boyhood Villa supporter, Forest’s Player of the Year scored one and assisted four in an astonishing 5-5 draw with Dean Smith’s side back in November.

O’Neill and the Forest hierarchy should perhaps look towards Villa for some inspiration when it comes to keeping hold of their best players.

Showing ambition

Jack Grealish was the subject of vast interest from Tottenham last summer. The Telegraph reported news of £25 million interest, but Spurs valued him higher and he stayed at Villa Park.

The Grealish scenario is perhaps slightly different from Forest’s with Lolley. The Villa star is a supporter of the club, whilst promotion chances were pretty high this season after they fell in the Play-Off Final last season.

Forest shouldn’t be deterred by a Premier League bully-boy, however.

Michail Antonio, Britt Assombalonga and Oliver Burke have all been offloaded without suitable replacements identified in the past.

If Forest are serious about competing for promotion next season then changes must be made.

The hierarchy in place has done a lot of good so far since their arrival. They can tick another box this summer by making it their priority to ensure that Lolley isn’t sold.
