Former Nottingham Forest loanee Molla Wagué is attracting interest from Panathinaikos.

The 28-year-old spent the second half of the season on loan from Udinese at the City Ground. It seems that he may be on the move again this summer, with his contract coming to an end in the next few weeks.

A report from Greek media outlet Sportdog states that the defender is on the radar of the Greek Super League Club. It states that he is “a key candidate for the heart of the defence”, but it does add that his wages could be an issue.

It comes as no surprise that Udinese haven’t offered the defender a new contract. He only made three appearances for the Serie A outfit, before linking up with the Reds in the second half of the season.

There’s no doubt that he did make a positive impact at the City Ground. Wagué made 11 appearances for the Reds under the management of Martin O’Neill.

He will be remembered by the club’s supporters for his goal threat from set-pieces. He scored three goals for the Reds, against Brentford, Ipswich Town and Swansea City. During a period in which the Reds were struggling to find the back of the net, his goals certainly came in handy.

If this particular move does go through, he’ll be lining up against an Evangelos Marinakis side, rather than playing for one.

Panathinaikos are the bitter vials of Olympiacos, also owned by Marinakis, and are likely to be battling it out for success next season.

Having already featured for Watford, Granada and Leicester City, the defender has a vast amount of experience. He would be more than capable of being a key player for Panathinaikos.

There hasn’t been any speculation about the Reds going back in for Wagué. Having performed well during his time at the club, some supporters may have felt that the Reds would try to bring him back permanently.

However, O’Neill already has numerous options in that area of the pitch.

As he already has a 32-man squad, he needs to make sure every player he brings in is needed. As it stands, there are more important areas to strengthen other than in central defence.

Michael Dawson, Tobias Figueiredo, Michael Hefele, Alexander Milošević and Joe Worrall are all contracted for next season. That is more than enough if they can all stay fit.

Wagué isn’t considerably better than any of the names mentioned above. That’s why it isn’t a surprise to see the Reds not pursuing him this summer.

He is certainly a good player though, and did a reasonable job last season. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him do well at his next club.
