Nottingham Forest are likely to already have ‘new striker’ and ‘another creative midfielder’ marked down on their summer shopping list.

The importance of bringing in said players has, however, been reiterated.

By a man who knows all about the value of match-winners in the final third.

Garry Birtles is a European Cup winner.

He once terrorised opposition defences at the City Ground, aided by a star-studded supporting cast.

Forest’s class of 2019 cannot claim to be cut from the same cloth.

There are obvious talents to be found.

Lewis Grabban netted 17 goals last season, while Joe Lolley registered 11 assists and Joao Carvalho became one of the most divisive figures in recent history.

The Reds have game-changers on their books.

Just not enough of them.

The summer transfer window gives them an opportunity to bolster those ranks.

Birtles has said in the Nottingham Post: “I would like to see Forest get a striker in. They were lacking another goalscorer when Lewis Grabban got injured last season.

“A midfielder who will get goals would also be useful. They might already have that man in Joao Carvalho.

“He’s been linked with Olympiakos, but let’s assume he stays. He’s a very talented player.”

Assuming anything is a risky business when it comes to Forest!

Hope is more prevalent than expectation.

And hopefully, Carvalho will stay put.

There are no guarantees though.

Forest are at least being linked with a number of players to fill the supposedly problematic positions.

Of the transfer speculation to have been sparked so far, a few wingers and a couple of strikers have been mentioned.

Nothing over the line yet.

Just a lot of hot air.

But the right areas are being explored, with Martin O’Neill admitting to being in those markets.

Which bodes well.

Calls from the stands and former favourites are not falling on deaf ears.

Now, though, is the time to start walking the walk.

For all of the talk, we are no nearer to knowing what or who Forest will have at their disposal in 2019-20.

That is set to keep the calls for additions ringing out, with the Reds needing to start ticking some of these attacking boxes while making a statement of intent.
