Nottingham Forest are set to complete the signing of ex-Newcastle and Bolton winger Sammy Ameobi, according to Nottinghamshire Live.

The 27-year-old departed crisis-club Bolton at the end of last season and is now able to sign for a new club as a free agent.

Ameobi scored four goals and registered four assists from 31 appearances last season.

Forest have Matty Cash and Arvin Appiah as potential right-sided options and Ameobi is set to compete with the academy duo for a place in the team.

The former England Under-21 international began his career at Newcastle, scoring four goals in 70 appearances.

He spent time on loan with Middlesbrough, Cardiff and Bolton prior to joining the Trotters permanently in 2017.

Ameobi will become Martin O’Neill’s first summer signing and a deal could be struck in the next few days.

Seat Pitch Summary

It is fair to suggest that this is a vastly underwhelming signing for Nottingham Forest.

In 114 games at Championship level, Ameobi has netted just 10 goals spread across spells with four different clubs.

The Forest squad is bloated and this summer should have been all about quality over quantity. This first signing for O’Neill doesn’t seem to suggest that strategy being evident.

Several players need offloading this summer and the Reds should be targeting signings that represent upgrades on the current crop.

Ameobi won’t be an upgrade on Cash; whilst his arrival at the City Ground could stunt the progression of the exciting Appiah.

The England youth international looked lively when called upon last season and the signing of Ameobi won’t help his first-team chances one bit.
