Nottingham Forest have this afternoon parted company with manager Martin O’Neill.
A brief statement on the club’s official website confirmed that he had departed the City Ground after just over five months in charge.
Quite simply it never really got going for the man who served the club with distinction as a player.
O’Neill was in charge of just 19 games. During his short tenure, he claimed eight wins, oversaw eight defeats with three games finishing in a share of the spoils.
Following Forest’s rise up the table under previous boss Karanka, a large number of fans struggled to warm to O’Neill stark management style.
The Reds did regress performance wise on the pitch but three wins on the spin to finish the 2018/19 campaign had looked to hand O’Neill some time.
That wasn’t to be and a Tweet from The Guardian journalist Daniel Taylor seems to indicate player power having a say in this latest development:
Some breaking news: Martin O’Neill has lost his job at Nottingham Forest. A number of key players have increasingly turned against him. It’s reached the top of the club and I’m told he’s been sacked, five months since taking job #NFFC

Actually don’t know what to say at this point.

Yet another manager not given a full season.
Can we please now get someone that unites the fans?
Impossible I know coz we’re a bunch of tossers.

Gutted. Really sad news. 💔😔 #NFFC

What a joke we are. I’m pleased he has gone, club legend but wasn’t the right man for the job. Kranaka should never of gone in the first place. However, this is one of the reasons why we don’t succeed, because we don’t hold on to managers.

Maybe he didn’t like the new kit 🤷♂️

I can’t see anybody coming in and lasting longer than 6 months now. With such irrational decisions we’re such a laughing stock.

Shouldn’t have got the job in the first place. Another dinosaur manager to join the likes of Allardyce, Pardew and Curbishley in the old people’s home 👍

Strange, he usually leaves it to the last minute
