Arvin Appiah has been fanning the transfer flames at Nottingham Forest, claiming that “top quality” additions will be made this summer.

He’s hardly going to say anything else is he.

The academy graduate is playing his part in the propaganda machine.

Expectations are high on Trentside, so let’s keep it that way.

His claims are, however, setting the Reds up for a fall.

As ever, actions speak louder than words.

Promising big is always a risky business.

Bold calls are all well and good, providing they are then backed up.

Appiah has said in the Nottingham Post: “I am sure if we make any signings this summer, they will be top quality. And you do look at that kind of thing, as a player, in the summer.

“You do take an interest in who is coming in.

“But if we do sign any quality players, hopefully they will be able to give me some advice to help me improve my game.

“Hopefully they will help me continue my development.”

‘Top quality’ additions do have the potential to aid Appiah’s cause and the greater collective one at the City Ground.

A teenage winger wants to learn from the best.

Martin O’Neill has to deliver that.

While also being wary of blocking the path of those emerging from a productive youth system.

Forest are being linked with several widemen.

Are any of them better than Appiah?

Or better than he could potentially be with regular game time?

Other areas are also been explored, with the Reds considered to be in need of more firepower.

And another goalkeeper.

Plus more creativity in the middle of the park.

All of those positions lend themselves nicely to exciting additions.

Particularly the outfield posts.

Forest have the chance to make statements of intent.

The kind that Appiah believes they are capable of delivering.

There has, however, been just one arrival so far – Sammy Ameobi.

First through the door and with plenty to prove.

He is not the marquee signing many are after, but there is a bigger picture in play at the City Ground.

Squad additions are as important as ready-made starters when taking into account a 46-game Championship marathon.

It is the ‘top quality’, though, that the Reds need if they are to talk the talk and walk the walk.
