Nottingham Forest were reportedly interested in signing Abel Hernández this time last year.

The forward is on the move again this summer, a year on from attracting interest from both Forest and Leeds United. According to Greek publication Sportdog, Aitor Karanka was interested in bringing the attacker to the City Ground last summer.

However, it was Leeds United who came closer to landing a deal for the 27-year-old. According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, in the midst of attempting to secure Marcelo Bielsa as their new head coach, the Whites were also in advanced talks with the striker.

The Yorkshire Evening Post‘s report also revealed that the striker was on £40,000-a-week at Hull City before he turned down a contract extension at the KCOM Stadium.

Hernández eventually ended up joining CSKA Moscow on a three-year deal last summer, but it didn’t go to plan. The striker struggled with hip and groin injuries for much of the season. This meant that he was only able to make 15 appearances, scoring just three goals.

That is perhaps why it was such an easy decision for both club and player to agree that it was best for his contract to be ended by mutual consent.

In this case, Hernández has previously proven that he is a threat in the Championship. His most productive campaign came in the 2015/16 campaign with the Tigers in which he scored 20 goals in 39 league appearances. He scored 39 goals for the Tigers in total over a four-year period.

Hernández might not be the most prolific of players but he’d be a good signing for any Championship side. The main concern would be whether or not he could stay fit for the entire season.

New Nottingham Forest manager Sabri Lamouchi may be in the market for a new striker. He currently has Lewis Grabban, Karim Ansarifard and Tyler Walker.

Given the inflated prices in the transfer market right now, looking at free agents might be a sensible option. Hernández might be one for the Reds to consider if he can prove his fitness and agrees to take a wage cut.
