Nottingham Forest’s 2019/20 Championship season kicked off in disappointing fashion as they were beaten 2-1 by West Bromwich Albion at the City Ground.

Some Nottingham Forest supporters are now urging their side to add to their attacking options before the transfer window slams shut. One name that has been mentioned is Newcastle United’s Dwight Gayle.

According to the Telegraph, West Brom, Leeds United and Stoke City are all chasing the striker’s signature this summer. The experienced frontman may be available on a season-long loan, with his first team chances at St James’ Park in doubt following the arrival of Joelinton.

Gayle returned to the Magpies at a difficult time – in which the club had seen Rafael Benítez leave, as unrest towards the club’s owner Mike Ashley continued to escalate. This was always going to make it difficult for the striker to know where he stood at the club.

For the most part, the 29-year-old has been a useful servant for the Magpies. He was a key figure in their promotion from the Championship in the 2016/17 season, contributing 23 league goals. He was able to follow this up with six goals in the Premier League in the following season.

However, Benítez deemed the striker to be surplus to requirements last season, allowing him to join the Baggies on loan. This allowed him to return to his best, contributing 23 league goals in the Championship.

There’s no doubt that Sabri Lamouchi will be on the lookout for a new striker this week. The Frenchman currently only has Lewis Grabban and Rafa Mir in his plans, which leaves him short of options.

There was an assumption among the club’s supporters that Tyler Walker might have had a role to play this season. However, the 22-year-old has since joining Lincoln City on a season-long loan.

Even if Walker had stayed, it wouldn’t have been too surprising if Lamouchi was still keen on adding another striker. His departure has only emphasised the need for the Reds to be proactive.

It remains to be seen whether any of the clubs interested in Gayle would be able to afford his wages. The 29-year-old is said to be on very hefty wages at Newcastle. Due to his record in the Championship though, it’s easy to see why there is so much interest in him.
