Millwall have completed a deal to sign Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Luke Steele on loan until January, the club has confirmed on their official site.

The 34-year-old has become the ninth arrival at the New Den this summer. Neil Harris needed to add another goalkeeper to his squad after Frank Fielding suffered an unfortunate injury on the opening weekend.

Sabri Lamouchi made it clear earlier this summer that the goalkeeper was free to leave the City Ground. He barely featured for the Reds over pre-season. However, he did impress when he started for a Nottingham Forest XI side against Lincoln City last week.

The Reds have bolstered their goalkeeping options considerably over recent weeks. Arijanet Muric signed on a season-long loan from Manchester City a couple of weeks ago, before Brice Samba joined for an undisclosed fee from Caen yesterday evening.

Lamouchi also still has Costel Pantilimon and Jordan Smith at his disposal.

It’ll certainly be interesting to see who he names in his starting line-up when the Reds travel to Elland Road to face Leeds United at the weekend.

Steele has found first team opportunities at the City Ground to be extremely limited since arriving from Bristol City. He has made just 16 appearances for the Reds, with majority of those coming in the Carabao Cup.

The highlight of his career with the Reds so far was arguably his performance in the penalty shoot-out win against Bury in the Carabao Cup last season.

Both Aitor Karanka and Martin O’Neill favoured Pantilimon over Steele in the Championship.

He’ll now have the opportunity to try and push himself into Millwall’s starting line-up under the management of Harris.

The Reds still have four goalkeepers to choose from, and a number of the club’s supporters saw the funny side of Steele’s departure on Twitter…
