It will be the first time the two sides have met in a cup competition since 2009 in the FA Cup.

The Reds last locked horns with the Rams in the Championship last season, where Martin O’Neill’s side overcame their opponents 1-0 at the City Ground, with Yohan Benalouane scoring early on for the hosts.

Sabri Lamouchi’s side booked themselves a place in the hat for the second round of the Carabao Cup after overcoming Fleetwood Town 1-0 on Tuesday night, Tiago Silva smashing home after some good work from John Bostock on 59 minutes.

The Reds will face Derby at the City Ground in the week commencing 26 August as they bid to improve on last season’s Carabao Cup run, which ended in the fourth round after a humiliating defeat at Burton Albion.

In comparison, the Rams also exited the competition in the fourth round last season. They enjoyed a memorable night at Old Trafford in the third round as they beat Manchester United on penalties. However, Frank Lampard’s side were beaten by Chelsea in the next round.

Both Lamouchi and Phillip Cocu will now be under pressure to name a strong starting line-up, despite still being in the early stages of the competition.
