Carl Jenkinson was handed his first start by Nottingham Forest boss Sabri Lamouchi this week as the Championship outfit beat League One side Fleetwood Town in the Carabao Cup.

Despite being able to make nine changes, Nottingham Forest only just sneaked through to the second round of the Carabao Cup. They were made to work for it by League One opposition at the City Ground.

Tiago Silva’s 59th-minute strike was the biggest talking point in an otherwise underwhelming game. However, Carl Jenkinson’s performance on his first start for the Reds was also a major positive for Sabri Lamouchi to take from the game.

The Reds, who have started the season playing in a 4-3-3 formation, have utilised Matty Cash as right-back in the first two games of the season. Tendayi Darikwa was previously first choice in that position but picked up an anterior cruciate ligament injury in pre-season.

Although Cash was much-improved against Leeds United, Jenkinson’s assured presence could make the Reds stronger at the back.

The £2 million signing, who played the entire 90 minutes, looked comfortable throughout both defensively and offensively. The 27-year-old could’ve even opened the scoring but saw his volley tipped over the crossbar.

It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Lamouchi opt to start Jenkinson against Birmingham City at the weekend. If Jenkinson manages to have a good game, he could well remain Lamouchi’s first choice for the rest of the campaign.

This could force Cash to push for a place in the starting line-up further up the pitch. He did play out wide regularly last season, especially under the management of Aitor Karanka. However, he has more competition in that area this season following the additions of Sammy Ameobi and Albert Adomah.

He may have to settle for a place on the bench for the time-being. However, having such stern competition in the form of Jenkinson may encourage him to improve his game even further.
