Nottingham Forest midfielder Brennan Johnson scored on his debut for Wales Under-21s against Belgium.
He was named in Paul Bodin’s starting line-up for his country’s Under-21 European Championships qualifying clash against Belgium. The match was played at Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground last night.
It didn’t take long for the 18-year-old to make his mark on proceedings.
He latched onto a loose ball to open the scoring after just three minutes. He turned the ball home from close range to beat Mile Svilar.
It could’ve been even better for the youngster, but he was unable to double his side’s advantage with a good chance just before half-time.
Johnson has previously represented Wales at both Under-17 and Under-19 level, but this was his first appearance for the Under-21 side.
He’ll be delighted to have already opened his account.
The midfielder may be given another opportunity to impress against Germany when they visit the Racecourse Ground on Tuesday. This will be another huge test for Wales in Group I.
Having been given opportunities by Sabri Lamouchi this season, the 18-year-old will now be full of confidence. This can only be a good thing for the Reds moving forward.
He made his debut for the Reds against West Bromwich Albion on the opening day of the season. Since then, he has made two further appearances in the Carabao Cup against Fleetwood Town and Derby County.
It wouldn’t be a surprise if Lamouchi is keeping a close eye on his performances for Wales Under-21s. If he has been, then Johnson will be hoping he has done enough to earn more opportunities in the Championship.
‘Going to be special’
It’s fair to say that Johnson is one of the club’s most exciting youngsters at present. Some Nottingham Forest fans have been sharing their excitement about Johnson’s goal on social media…
