Nottingham Forest will be hoping that João Carvalho is back to his best after the international break.

The £13.2m-rated midfielder missed the start of the season through injury. However, he did manage to make two appearances before the international break.

The 22-year-old has already picked up a goal and assist in his first two appearances of the season. That will have undoubtedly given him plenty of confidence.

Carvalho missed a large chunk of pre-season after picking up an ankle injury against Alfreton Town in June.

Even though he missed out on pre-season, Carvalho appears to be a key part of Lamouchi’s plans for this season. Once he has returned to full fitness, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him return to the starting line-up.

However, it will be more difficult for the midfielder to force his way into the side than it was last season. The Reds have been performing well with the likes of Ben Watson, Tiago Silva, Alfa Semedo and Samba Sow playing in midfield.

There’s no doubt that the former Portugal Under-21 star is a popular figure with the club’s supporters. Carvalho got a standing ovation when he was introduced as a substitute against Derby County in the Carabao Cup.

The midfielder recently spoke to the club’s official media team about the club’s supporters. He said: “They are amazing. They are supporting me every day.

“I can do better with them. When they are supporting me, I can do better things.

“It’s good for me and it’s good for the club that the supporters are enjoying my football.

“I am really very happy to be here.”

The Reds are back in Championship action next weekend against league leaders Swansea City.

It remains to be seen whether or not Lamouchi names Carvalho in his starting line-up for the first time this season.
