Steve Bruce has spoken about the future of Newcastle United midfielder Jack Colback after leaving him out of his 25-man Premier League squad.
The Reds were said to be keen on bringing the midfielder back to the City Ground earlier this summer under the management of Martin O’Neill.
According to The Chronicle, the Magpies are willing to consider low bids for the midfielder when the transfer window reopens in a few months. It remains to be seen whether the Reds reignite their interest under Sabri Lamouchi.
Despite missing out on the 25-man Premier League squad, Bruce has allowed Colback to continue training with the first-team at St James’ Park. This wasn’t the case under Rafael Benítez who completely froze him out.
Bruce was asked about the midfielder’s future by The Shields Gazette. He said: “I had only been here three weeks, and people like Jack, I had known a long time.
“It was very, very difficult. I saw him train (yesterday), and he trained very, very well.
“It’s not their fault, so it’s vitally important they’re still part of the squad in terms of training every day, and it’s our responsibility to make sure they stay fit, healthy and when the opportunity comes along for them, they’re able to take it.”
It would be hugely surprising if the 29-year-old didn’t leave St James’ Park in a few months. The main reason he stayed this summer is because he felt he had a chance of getting back into the first-team.
The Reds may be interested in the midfielder, but only if they can strike a deal that’s right for the club. This would mean that Colback would have to take a wage cut from the £35,000-a-week he currently earns at Newcastle (Spotrac).
Even then, the Reds may feel they already have enough midfield options. Lamouchi added the likes of John Bostock, Alfa Semedo, Samba Sow and Tiago Silva to his squad this summer. They have all made very promising starts.
For the time-being, Colback will be looking to ensure that he remains fully fit. This will give him the best chance of securing a move away when the transfer window does finally reopen in a few months.
