The transfer window in England does not open again for another three months, but Nottingham Forest are already generating speculation.
Randell Williams is the latest name said to figure on the recruitment radar.
According to TEAMtalk: “Championship quartet Cardiff, Nottingham Forest, QPR and Huddersfield have all checked on Williams in the opening weeks of the new campaign.”
There is a big jump between checking on and signing on.
Something would have gone seriously wrong if the Reds weren’t watching a number of players.
Scouting systems exist so that talent does not slip the net.
Over the course of any given campaign, in a network which spreads across the world, thousands of players will be “checked on”.
Williams, if he is a potential target at all, is a small fish in a big pond.
He has, however, made it further than most when it comes to actually generating a story.
Substance

How much substance there is to that remains to be seen.
And if Forest are in the mix, then is he the sort of player they should be targeting?
If the Reds can build from this point and cement a standing inside the Championship’s top six, then additions will be required in the New Year.
In fact, that remains the case regardless of league position on January 1.
Lamouchi’s men are either going to be looking to consolidate a place inside the leading pack or close the gap on it.
Either way, fresh faces will be sought.
And with a shot at promotion to the Premier League on the line, it is vital that the right calls are made.
With that in mind, would proven not be preferable to potential?
There is plenty to say for bringing in a player of Williams’ ilk – a highly-rated 20-year-old.
Mix

Forest, though, already have Joe Lolley, Albert Adomah and Sammy Ameobi filling wide roles in a system which doesn’t easily incorporate out-and-out wingers.
Brennan Johnson, fresh from penning a new long-term contract, is also in the mix.
Williams would offer a left-footed alternative to Lolley, but how much game time would he realistically see?
And if he is not being brought in for the present, then why would he opt for the City Ground over the other options that could be put to him?
If another forward is sought, then striker is the box most in need of ticking.
Should the search extend to the flanks, then another experienced option could help to fire Forest back towards the Promised Land.
Williams may well prove to be a shrewd addition for someone.
It is, however, asking a lot for a player with three assists for the League Two leaders this season to make the step up into a Championship promotion push.
Forest do, of course, need to keep one eye on the future, but the hope is that will take care of itself once more seasoned professionals complete the job of returning the club to the big time.
