Nottingham Forest ensured they went into the second international break of the campaign in an automatic promotion place following a 1-0 win over Brentford at the City Ground.

Midfielder Ben Watson scored his second winning goal in as many home games, thumping home an unstoppable effort in the 56th minute.

The 34-year-old maestro epitomised the Forest performance, with a display which oozed elegance, leadership and class.

This was a showing that highlighted what Sabri Lamouchi’s team are all about. The work-ethic which was showcased to an expectant City Ground crowd was a joy to behold. On the basis of today; this is very much a team that supporters will get behind.

The Forest boss rang the changes again from Tuesday night. Chema Rodriguez replaced Tobias Figueiredo at the back; whilst Joao Carvalho started in place of Sammy Ameobi.

The Spanish defender put in a composed performance alongside Joe Worrall and he looks like being a quality player going forward.

On the whole, it was a game of few chances, although Forest will be pleased with how they stifled a typically free-flowing Brentford outfit.

Tiago Silva almost opened the scoring in the first half. His swirling free-kick was only just wide of David Raya’s right-hand upright.

At the other end, Mathias Jensen must have thought he’d opened the scoring just before the interval. His set-piece ricocheted off the Forest wall and was heading goalbound. Brice Samba somehow sprung in the opposite direction and produced a stunning piece of goalkeeping; ensuring a goalless first 45.

Pleasing

The second half proved comfortable for Forest. Having scored their goal in the 56th minute, the Reds showed tremendous game management to see the three points over the line.

With some better decision making the winning margin may have been more emphatic but one aspect of this win was particularly special. Sabri Lamouchi has spoken about his players upping themselves to put in a proper performance.

This showing will have delighted the gaffer and this was once again a game Forest might have lost last season.

It’s far too early to start making predictions as to what might happen in May. The early promotion prognosis is looking hopeful though and Forest fans will hope this steely resolution stays evident in the coming months.
