Nottingham Forest legend Colin Barrett has exclusively told Seat Pitch his thoughts on the ongoing debate over Joao Carvalho and Tiago Silva.
Forest’s £13.2 million record signing has played on the left-wing during the last two home games; with Silva occupying the number 10 role that Carvalho is typically more accustomed with.
Of course, the dilemma for boss Sabri Lamouchi is finding a formula which can get the best out of both players and that could prove tricky.
As the season progresses it could be a case of one or the other and Barrett thinks the battle for the shirt will be intriguing.
He told Seat Pitch: “It’s an interesting one because they are both quite different. Tiago has the box-to-box aspect, the graft and the eye for a pass. Joao has the flair and the ability to take risks – he’s the luxury that you simply have to cater for.
“Ultimately though as the season progresses they will fight for one shirt. I think Joao probably just has the edge at the moment as he is the more proven of the two.
“For Lamouchi he really is between the devil and the deep blue sea as he’d love to pick them both regular but that might not always be the best course of action.”
Seat Pitch Summary
It certainly does provide the Forest manager with food for thought. Carvalho can look out of place when deployed in an unnatural position; whilst Lewis Grabban thrives on the service of Carvalho.
When such a sum is paid on a player then it seems natural that a team will be built around a player.
There is a case to suggest that Carvalho is still getting up to scratch after missing the whole of pre-season through an injury picked up against Alfreton in the first pre-season friendly.
In the short term that could allow Silva the chance to deputise. With plenty of options out wide it would seem foolish to keep shoehorning a player into a false position.
Of course, whilst Forest are winning games of football the debate isn’t likely to be as fierce. When Forest do succumb to a bad result or two, however, that will be when Lamouchi really has a decision to make.
