Ex-Nottingham Forest player Geoff Thomas calls former striker ‘devastating’

Former Nottingham Forest midfielder Geoff Thomas has taken to Twitter to heap praise on former team-mates Pierre van Hooijdonk and Kevin Campbell.

Thomas signed for Forest from Wolves in 1997 and would spend two years at the City Ground, scoring four goals in 25 appearances for the Reds.

Thomas was part of the squad that won the old Division One. Campbell and striker partner van Hooijdonk were lethal that season netting 59 goals between them; the most of any striker partners anywhere else in Europe during that season.

During his time on Trentside, Thomas struggled with injuries. He did enjoy a successful career on the whole, however, playing nine times for England between 1991 and 1992.

Thomas was responding on Twitter to an article from The Guardian which featured an interview with the controversial van Hooijdonk.

Despite the Dutchman leaving the City Ground in acrimonious circumstances, Thomas was clearly a huge admirer of his relationship with Campbell.

The man with 46 caps for Holland signed for Forest in 1997, costing £3.5 million from Celtic (BBC Sport).

Lethal

His goalscoring record at Forest was nothing short of remarkable. He smashed 41 goals in 77 appearances before departing for Vitesse Arnhem.

Controversy arose when Forest sold van Hooijdonk’s strike partner, Campbell, to Trabzonspor. The powerhouse of a frontman went on strike at the City Ground and although he did return to play for the Reds the relationship between the two parties was beyond repair.

Thomas is right to cite the duo as devastating in his tweet and hopefully, the Reds can achieve similar heroics this season to the class of 1997/98.
