Former Nottingham Forest academy graduate has told Sky Sports that the Reds have been a ‘surprise package’ so far this season.
The ex-midfielder had two spells at the City Ground as a player, the first after rising through the youth ranks at the football club.
In total, he made 155 appearances for the Reds and also had spells with Leeds United, Sheffield Wednesday and Southampton, where he played 62 Premier League matches.
Prutton joined Southampton for £2.5 million (BBC Sport) in 2003 and was largely considered as one of England’s next big things. He failed to scale such heights, however, and instead became a Football League stalwart.
Now a presenter for Sky Sports’ EFL coverage, Prutton is backing Forest for another three points this weekend when they travel to Wigan.
He told Sky Sports: “Nottingham Forest have been a little bit of a surprise package so far. They have ground out more results than I would have anticipated and are looking well placed for a meaningful run at the top six – at the very least. I think they could nick another win on Sunday.”
It has to be said that it’s rare for Prutton to say something positive about Forest these days. Some supporters do believe there is some negativity surrounding Prutton and the Reds, especially when it comes to him doing these weekly predictions.
The surprise package tag is interesting. As Sabri Lamouchi wasn’t a household name when he arrived back in July, some outsiders will have instantly expected a season of struggle. That hasn’t been the case, however, and before a ball is kicked at Wigan on Sunday, the Reds are guaranteed to maintain a top-six position.
There will only be so long Forest can carry such a mantle around with them, however. If the Reds are still flying high at the November international break then people will surely have to take notice of Lamouchi’s team – including Prutton!
