Nottingham Forest news: History-making opportunity beckons and Reds must take it

There is a first time for everything, and Nottingham Forest have the chance to prove as much when they head to Wigan on Sunday.

The Reds are preparing to take in a seventh visit to the DW Stadium.

They have never taken three points back home with them.

Or progress in cup competitions.

An opportunity to right that wrong has presented itself.

History, albeit not the most exciting kind, is there for the making in deepest, darkest Lancashire.

Victory over the Latics would be most welcome for any number of reasons.

Cementing a standing among the Championship frontrunners is the top priority.

Especially as those around the Reds will be in action on Saturday.

By the time they take to the field for the first time after the latest international break, Forest will know what is expected and required from them.

Challenge

Not that said challenge changes on a weekly basis.

Just win, baby!

There is, however, an opportunity to put down another important marker.

Lamouchi’s side remain unbeaten on the road this season, boasting the joint-best record in the division, and will want that run to continue.

Along with a 10-game sequence in the league which stretches back to the opening weekend.

“My message to Sabri Lamouchi’s players is quite simple as they prepare to face Wigan this weekend,” Garry Birtles has said in the Nottingham Post.

“Don’t start sluggishly’ – if they can go and secure a first ever win at the DW Stadium, then that will really set them up for the next few games before the break next month and really cement their position – as it stands, things are so congested and a defeat or two could see you dumped right down the table.”

That is the fear at present – when will the wheels come off?

Not all of them, but potentially one.

Players, coaches and fans have grown accustomed to not coming unstuck.

It will happen again at some stage and the reaction to those setbacks will be key.

The plan, though, must be to delay such a predicament for a few more days at least.

Wigan represent the start of a run which looks particularly favourable on paper.

A scalp never secured before when outside of the City Ground would set the ball rolling nicely.

In the past, a point is the best Forest have snatched from the Latics.

But their record is not as bad as it may appear.

They have suffered only one defeat at the DW in the league, and another in the FA Cup, with five draws rather setting the tone heading towards the rekindling of a second tier rivalry.

Would another stalemate be a terrible result?

Probably not.

Now is the time for positive thinking though and, as alluded to by Birtles, positive starts when picking up a baton laid down a fortnight ago.
