Nottingham Forest target Scott McKenna has slammed Aberdeen’s performance against Celtic and even criticised his own display during the contest.

The 22-year-old man-mountain was on Forest’s radar before they signed Chema Rodriguez and the Scotland international was critical of his showing when asked by the Daily Record following Sunday’s thrashing.

McKenna was subject to a £3 million bid from Forest during the summer but that was quickly rejected by the Dons. His current club values their star man at £7 million (Daily Record).

The man with 12 Scotland caps believes Aberdeen lacked leaders in their 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Celtic on Sunday.

He told the Daily Record: “There are leaders in the dressing room but no one showed it on Sunday.

“It’s all well and good doing it when we’re playing good football and two or three goals up, but it’s days like Sunday when you need real leaders to step up and take control. That didn’t happen.

“I like to think I can be one of those leaders but I was nowhere near it on Sunday though and at fault for a couple of the goals. I can’t sit here and anything about anyone else.”

With Forest doing alright in the Championship this season, McKenna could be forgiven for wondering what might have been had he joined the Reds in the summer.

The Dons are languishing in fifth place in the Scottish Premiership and are 10 points behind the Old Firm after 10 games of the campaign.

Lucky escape for Forest?

McKenna has only played in six games after suffering a thigh injury which saw him sidelined for a while.

The big factor in Forest persuing the Scottish enforcer was the fact that he is prominently left-footed. Rodriguez was signed instead and he has looked the part so far.

The fact that McKenna couldn’t pull out a good performance against one of the best sides in the division won’t enhance his chances of a move to England.

Any player arriving from the Scottish Premiership will always have something to prove in a league as demanding as the Championship and after his weekend comments, McKenna will be looking for an improvement in the future.
