Nottingham Forest midfielder Ryan Yates has told the club’s official website that he isn’t looking too far into the future as he battles back from a knee operation.

The 22-year-old made his comeback in the defeat against Hull, stepping off the bench for the final half-an-hour of the contest.

He will be hoping to start tomorrow when Sabri Lamouchi takes his team to Luton and he concedes that getting into the team is his main priority right now.

He told the club’s official website: “I am not looking too far ahead, I am just trying to fight for that shirt again and keep improving. I think there is more to come from me; I have to take it day by day, keep training harder and harder and keep learning from the experienced pros in the team.”

Yates was a regular in the team under Martin O’Neill during the second half of last season. He hopes that once he does get the chance to shine, he can continue playing games for Forest.

He continued: “If I do get a chance, I have to take it with both hands and try and keep hold of the shirt. I just need to show my passion, desire and hopefully, we can win games.”

Seat Pitch Summary – Forest youngster must capitalise on the injury situation

Yates looks very much like a start in years to come at the City Ground; although it’ll be interesting to see what the future holds when Forest’s injured players return.

Samba Sow and Alfa Semedo are both likely to be in front of Yates and that could shunt him way down the pecking order.

The 16 games he played last season will have undoubtedly whet his appetite for more first-team action but there is no guarantee of him getting it under Lamouchi.

You would expect his summer signings to play on a frequent basis, whilst Ben Watson is currently in the form of his life.

The key message in these comments is what Yates says he must do when he’s handed a chance. He quite simply has to play well and try and make himself undroppable in the eyes of the Forest boss.
