Signing of Lawrence Shankland would be bad news for Nottingham Forest’s Rafa Mir

Nottingham Forest were linked with a move for Dundee United striker Lawrence Shankland over the weekend.

According to the Scottish Sun, representatives from the City Ground oversaw his goalscoring performance in Friday’s win over Dundee. His goalscoring exploits are certainly attracting interest from numerous clubs.

Shankland seems to have a natural goalscoring instinct which is crucial for any striker. The 24-year-old is comfortable playing as a lone striker which is how Sabri Lamouchi likes to set his side up.

Forest weren’t blessed with lots of striking options last season, but they arguably have even fewer this season. Shankland would certainly add depth to the squad in a position which does need strengthening.

He has already scored 19 goals in all competitions this season for Dundee United. During his time with Ayr United, he netted 61 goals in 73 appearances. That isn’t a bad return at all, albeit at a lower level than the Championship.

There will be supporters who remain sceptical about making signings from Scotland. Jason Cummings didn’t make the desired impact at the City Ground, but the success of John McGinn at Aston Villa proves there are hidden gems to be found.

One individual who wouldn’t benefit from Shankland’s arrival would be Rafa Mir.

The 22-year-old has really struggled with the Reds since arriving on a season-long loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers. He is still yet to open his account for the club.

He was given a chance by Lamouchi in the starting line-up against Wigan Athletic, but failed to impress. He looks a long way off being able to challenge Lewis Grabban for a place in the side.

If Shankland does sign for the Reds, it would only limit his first-team opportunities further.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if the Reds did enquire about the possibility of terminating his loan deal early in January.
