Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce will desperately look for clubs to buy former Nottingham Forest loanee Jack Colback during the January transfer window, according to The Telegraph.

Colback was left out of Bruce’s 25-man Premier League squad at the start of the 2019/20 campaign and couldn’t get hooked up with a new club before the transfer window closed.

The report claims that Colback along with Henri Saivet are both for sale in January, with both earning roughly £50,000-a-week (The Telegraph).

Colback spent 18 months on loan at the City Ground. He made 55 appearances and adhered himself to the club’s supporters.

Signing him in the summer didn’t appear to be an option. Given his excessive wages that doesn’t really seem surprising, although he will be keen to revive his career in January.

Some of the Forest faithful would probably relish Colback being back at the City Ground, although there is a sense that the club has progressed in his absence.

The 30-year-old typically operated as part of a two in a 4-2-3-1 system during his time at Forest. Sabri Lamouchi likes a little bit more from his midfielders than simply patrolling the middle of the park and that might not suit Colback.

Ben Watson is also playing out of his skin, so signing him to play in the holding role is off the table.

Decisions

It’s not completely out of the realms of reality that Colback might just sit tight on his cushty contract for another six months.

The maestro is unlikely to take a pay cut whilst £50,000-a-week sits on the table and when he is released during the summer he may then actively pursue another club.

If Forest could get him on a more realistic wage then it might be one to consider as an option in the squad. Right now, however, Colback simply isn’t worth the money, especially with the Reds have greater needs for reinforcements elsewhere.

Despite always performing for Forest, limbo awaits Colback when the January window reopens.
