Nottingham Forest were beaten 1-0 by Cardiff City inside a bitterly cold City Ground.

The Reds slipped to defeat after Nathaniel Mendez-Laing netted a 14th-minute goal. His strike from just outside the penalty area flew past Brice Samba like a rocket.

Forest found it difficult to break down a dogged Neil Harris team after that point.

The visitors dug in and ground out a win despite having far less possession and far fewer shots on goal.

Following defeat for Sabri Lamouchi’s team, we at Nottingham Forest News analysed the performance by rating the players out of 10:

Brice Samba – 6

A quiet afternoon for the Forest goalkeeper who could do nothing with the goal.

Matty Cash – 7

Energetic going forward and solid at the back. Cash was once again one of Forest’s better players.

Joe Worrall – 7

Another decent performance from Worrall who coped well with the threat of Gary Madine.

Tobias Figueiredo – 6

Again Figueiredo did okay and certainly looks like a player who can play a part this season.

Jack Robinson – 7

Got forward extremely well and arguably came the closest to getting an equaliser for Forest.

Ben Watson – 6

The combative midfielder was steady once again. Dropped into central defence as Forest went in search of a goal.

Tiago Silva – 7

Probably Forest’s best player. Is certainly getting better every game and tried everything to get the Reds back into the game.

Joe Lolley – 6

Had three players around him every time he got the ball. Dropped deep into central midfield to get back on the ball. Does seem largely ineffective on the right as opposed to the left-hand side.

Joao Carvalho – 6

A frustrating day for Carvalho who missed a good chance early on.

Sammy Ameobi – 6

Another strange day for Ameobi. One minute looks brilliant but occasionally lets himself down by taking too many touches.

Lewis Grabban – 6

Forest didn’t play to his strengths at all and that meant that Grabban was starved of service.

Alfa Semedo – 6

Put himself about and had a good chance to score.

Albert Adomah – 6

Tried his best to get the Reds going but to no avail.

Rafa Mir – 6

Didn’t see a lot of the ball during his brief cameo.
