Nottingham Forest youngster Jake Taylor played a key part in helping Port Vale stay on course for a Wembley visit on Tuesday night.

The Valiants took on Mansfield Town in the last 32 of the EFL Trophy and after a 2-2 draw, John Askey’s side progressed on penalties.

The 21-year-old was introduced from the bench in the 74th minute and gave Vale the lead just eight minutes later.

An Omari Sterling-James equaliser sent the game to penalties; with Taylor keeping his nerve from 12 yards out.

The cameo performance as an impact sub highlighted just how important the Forest man has become for Askey’s team.

The youngster is only on a deal until January. After scoring his sixth goal of the season, the League Two outfit will surely be looking at an extension.

Taylor is clearly benefitting from the regular game time. The central midfielder is really becoming accustomed to men’s football and Forest will be keeping a watchful eye on his progress.

He is out of contract in the summer and his chances of forcing his way into the City Ground reckoning seem unlikely. Nonetheless, the club will still be monitoring his development.

Forest’s academy has produced some tremendous players over the years and it’s very rare the club nurtures a bad one.

Taylor’s goal scuppered Mansfield’s dreams of Wembley for another season.

The Stags utilised the Forest academy last season to bolster their own squad Tyler Walker, Jorge Grant and Jordan Smith all spent time on loan at the club during 2018/19.

This season the Stags went in a different direction and as they toil in League Two, Port Vale are reaping the benefits of having a Forest loanee doing the business on the pitch.
