Nottingham Forest are back in the hunt to sign former Manchester United trainee Nicholas Ioannou, according to Sky Sports.
The player who primarily operates as a left-back was linked earlier this summer and is valued in the region of £750,000 by APOEL Nicosia.
Forest lost Matty Cash yesterday, with the academy graduate signing for Premier League outfit Aston Villa for £16 million.
Although the Reds are well-stocked in the right-back spot which he has vacated, it seems Sabri Lamouchi is still keen to further enhance his defensive options.
The 24-year-old was released by the Red Devils in 2014 and has been on the books at APOEL ever since, making 107 appearances for the Cypriot outfit.
Forest have been busy adding to their team this summer, with no fewer than five players being added to Sabri Lamouchi’s ranks.
Jack Colback, Tyler Blackett, Lyle Taylor, Fouad Bachirou and Luke Freeman have all arrived at the club ahead of the new campaign.
During the 2019/20 campaign, Ioannou played 33 games in all competitions, including six in Champions League qualifying and eight in the Europa League where APOEL came through a group featuring Sevilla, Qarabag and Dudelange.
Ioannou captained the side during both games in Champions League qualifying against Ajax, including the goalless draw on home soil.
NFN Verdict – Strength in depth could bode well
If Ioannou was to sign it might drop a hint that Lamouchi sees Tyler Blackett as more of an option for centre-back.
Yuri Ribeiro and Gaetan Bong are in place at the City Ground and if those two were deemed part of the boss’ plans. With that in mind, signing Ioannou wouldn’t make sense.
Forest struggled last season with a lack of options from the bench and it looks as though that won’t be a problem this time around.
