Nottingham Forest have completed the signing of free-agent goalkeeper Abdoulaye Diallo following his release from Genclerbirligi at the end of last season.
The 28-year-old worked under Sabri Lamouchi during his time at Ligue 1 outfit Rennes and it’s anticipated Diallo will provide competition for Brice Samba.
During 2019/20 the uncompromising goalkeeper made four appearances for the Super Lig outfit having signed from Rennies in the summer.
Diallo has 17 caps for Senegal having made his debut in 2015 during a 2-1 victory over Ghana.
During his time at Rennes, the custodian made 32 appearances; keeping seven clean sheets in the process.
He has also played for Le Havre and Caykur Rizespor during his career, largely acting as a backup wherever he has been.
During the 2017/18 campaign, Diallo was Lamouchi’s backup goalkeeper and it does seem likely that he will retain such a role at the City Ground.
The move is perhaps surprising considering that Lamouchi has spoken fondly about Jordan Smith.
A Forest academy graduate, the 25-year-old recently penned a new deal to keep him at the City Ground and it was thought he’d compete for the gloves with Samba.
Smith was called upon twice last season during the closing stages of the season, with Lamouchi apparently a fan of his goalkeeping.
Clearly, Lamouchi feels there is a need for another goalkeeper within his ranks and perhaps one of the club’s younger stoppers will now head out on loan.
Jordan Wright and George Shelvey are two of the up-and-coming ‘keepers and it would be no surprise if one, or both, of those two, headed out on loan.
Diallo will link up with the squad straight away and should be in contention for this weekend’s game against Cardiff City at the City Ground.
