Nottingham Forest under-23s were forced to settle for a point in the first away trip of their Professional Development League campaign against Sheffield United.

The Reds led the Blades 2-0 at the Technique Stadium, the home of National League outfit Chesterfield.

Will Swan and Virgil Gomis both scored as Andy Reid oversaw proceedings, with manager Chris Cohen leaving to join Luton Town earlier in the day.

Sheffield United weren’t to be denied though and goals from Antwoine Hackford and George Broadbent meant they claimed a share of the spoils.

Who takes over the under-23 outfit, in the long run, will remain to be seen. Cohen ended his 13-year association with the club on Monday, joining the first-team coaching staff at Kenilworth Road.

Reid is unlikely to take the role of manager based on the fact that he also has a commitment with the youth setup for the Republic of Ireland national team.

With that in mind Gary Brazil might need to pull off another masterstroke and appoint another capable coach to oversee things.

Match sharpness

A few first-team players earned the chance to get some minutes under their belts last night.

Alex Mighten came on against Cardiff on Saturday and he got some more minutes into his legs for the under-23s.

Brennan Johnson lined up as the No.10, whereas Jordan Gabriel was back for the under-23s after playing in the first two games of the season at Barnsley and QPR under Sabri Lamouchi.

New signing Ateef Konate also took his bow in English football, playing in central midfield for the Reds.

With the Reds now boasting a big squad it will be interesting to see if more senior members get the chance to earn some minutes for the under-23s.

Forest’s next outing in on Monday 28th September when they travel to Wigan for a 1pm kick-off.
