Portuguese star Joao Carvalho is set to end his Nottingham Forest nightmare and sign for Almeria, according to reports.

It’ll be the second time the Spanish club have swooped to take a player off Forest’s hands, with Arvin Appiah signing for the Spaniards in 2019.

During 2019/20 he managed just 26 outings in all competitions, with just nine of those coming in the way of Championship starts.

Carvalho signed for Forest in the summer of 2018, costing a club-record £13 million from Benfica.

Aitor Karanka looked to have pulled off a masterstroke with his ability immediately shining through.

In 40 appearances during 2018/19, he scored four goals and registered eight assists, despite falling out of favour under Martin O’Neill during the second half of the season.

Almeria will be gunning for promotion again during the 2020/21 campaign having fallen short in their quest last season.

Carvalho often divided the fanbase on Trentside. Some recognised his undoubted ability, whilst others didn’t see the fascination citing a distinct lack of consistency.

Ultimately, the 23-year-old has not really had a reasonable crack at the whip, arguably falling foul to Sabri Lamouchi’s more conservative style.

Carvalho is thought to have travelled to Spain and could complete a move sooner rather than later.

It is unconfirmed at this stage whether the deal is a permanent or whether he’ll join on loan.

Forest will hope that Carvalho’s departure is the first of many, with the glut of new signings bloating the squad somewhat.

No fewer than 12 new signings will see around seven players deemed surplus to requirements and it looks like being a busy run-in through to the deadline.
