Nottingham Forest are set to join Championship rivals Watford in a straight fight for Newcastle United winger Christian Atsu, according to the Northern Echo.

It is thought that the Hornets are in pole position for the winger who has featured just once for the Magpies this season.

Atsu signed for Newcastle in 2017 for £6 million from Chelsea. In 121 appearances for the club, he’s scored eight goals and registered 10 assists.

Forest have added 12 players to their ranks with Cafu’s arrival from Olympiacos set to be confirmed as number 13 early next week.

Sabri Lamouchi has previously claimed he’d like to see a winger added to his ranks though and it remains to be seen if one will be added.

Atsu has played for several clubs during his career, spending time on loan at Vitesse, Everton, Bournemouth and Malaga during his time spent on Chelsea’s books.

Joe Lolley is currently nursing an injury, leaving Sammy Ameobi and Alex Mighten to operate on the flanks.

Nuno Da Costa was introduced from the bench against Bristol City yesterday but in truth, he’s shown very little during his time at Forest to suggest he’s capable of adapting to the Championship.

With that in mind, a winger has been identified and Forest’s interest in Atsu does make sense.

NFN Verdict – Winger would be ideal but Atsu would be a risk

Forest could do with another option out wide but the Newcastle man is perhaps too much of a risk.

He is quick, versatile and can take players on but ultimately he’s played very little football in recent years.

Atsu is also paid £30,000-a-week at St James’ Park and on that sort of salary, he’d be a sizeable gamble.

Forest should perhaps turn their attentions elsewhere.
