Nottingham Forest are set to rival a host of clubs to sign former Manchester City youngster Wato Kuate, according to TEAMtalk.

It is thought that QPR are leading Forest, Birmingham City and Sheffield Wednesday in the race to sign the midfielder.

Kuate is a free agent following his departure from Finnish outfit RoPS at the end of last season and a move to England looks on the cards.

The 25-year-old departed City in 2014 and since leaving has spent time in Scotland with Dundee United and in Turkey and Israel.

Transfermarkt lists Kuate as a defensive midfielder and surely Forest aren’t actively pursuing his signature.

Forest have Jack Colback, Ryan Yates, Samba Sow, Cafu and Fouad Bachirou who are all capable of playing in the holding role.

Boss Chris Hughton will want to be selective with his signings if he is to make any and forward options will surely be a priority.

Kuate doesn’t really provide Forest with anything that they don’t already have and his signing would be a strange one.

The Reds have already added 13 players to the ranks this summer and the remit for the new manager might be to get some players out as opposed to the other way around.

Whoever signs the ex-City starlet should tread with caution.

He hasn’t played regular football for some time and managed just five appearances during last season in Finland.

Forest’s recruitment needs to be better and the signing of the 25-year-old wouldn’t exactly represent a step in the right direction.

NFN Verdict – Signing Kuate wouldn’t make sense and seems unlikely for Forest

The report does claim that QPR are in pole position and that should represent music to the ears of Reds supporters.

Any player who Hughton adds needs to be up to the required level of the Championship and be an upgrade on what Forest already have.

Otherwise, offloading a few more simply has to be the main challenge for the new manager.
