Stephen Martin has been chosen as the match referee for Nottingham Forest’s clash with Rotherham United in the Championship tomorrow night.

The Reds will be hoping to kick on after claiming their first win of the season against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday in Chris Hughton’s first game in charge.

Martin was the fourth official for Saturday’s game but will move into the middle for Forest’s clash with the Millers.

Martin is often remembered for his performance when Forest played Newcastle United back in 2016.

The Staffordshire-based official gave Forest two penalties, which were both missed, and sent off Jonjo Shelvey and Paul Dummett as the Reds beat the champions-elect 2-1.

Martin has overseen 10 Forest matches during his career refereeing in the Championship and the Reds have quite a good record when he is officiating their fixtures.

Last season he refereed three Forest games with two, against Cardiff and QPR away, finishing in victory for the Reds. The other was the 1-1 draw at Blackburn where Joe Lolley cancelled out an Adam Armstrong goal.

Forest have lost just twice when Martin has officiated them – a 2-1 defeat to Rotherham under Martin O’Neill and a 1-0 home reverse to Preston when Aitor Karanka was in charge.

It’s fair to say the Reds have had some decisions go against them in recent memory from certain Championship referees, but Martin has typically proved a steady performer.

Consistent

He has shown 14 yellow cards to Forest players during his ten games in charge, producing one red card to Danny Fox on the final day of the 2015/16 campaign.

This season he has taken charge of three Championship fixtures and is tipped as a referee who could go onto officiate in the Premier League.

Forest will hope Martin is on form tomorrow night as the Reds aim to breathe life into their 2020/21 campaign.
