Nottingham Forest were interested in signing Rotherham midfielder Matt Crooks before Sabri Lamouchi’s departure, according to the Rotherham Advertiser.

The Reds were hoping to bolster their midfield ranks with a swoop on the Millers for the former Rangers performer.

Crooks played in a holding midfield role at the City Ground during last week’s 1-1 draw – but can operate in a number of roles.

He has played as a No.10 and as a conventional box-to-box performer under Paul Warne during 2020/21.

Last season, Crooks helped the Millers back into the Championship, scoring 11 goals and registering four assists.

His impressive goal-haul came playing in the box-to-box role and some might suggest Forest still lack that player.

Harry Arter, Ryan Yates, Jack Colback and Samba Sow are the players currently vying for midfield roles at the City Ground.

Former Bournemouth man Arter can play between the lines but the other three are all pretty similar.

With that in mind, Lamouchi’s pursuit of another midfielder – one with a different set of skills – perhaps did make sense.

It does seem unlikely, however, that Chris Hughton will return for the Football League stalwart.

Crooks is a mainstay in the Rotherham team having previously spent time playing for Northampton, Accrington, Scunthorpe, Hartlepool and Huddersfield.

NFN Verdict – Crooks an interesting target

Crooks arriving on Trentside might have raised a few eyebrows, not least because Forest are already well-stocked in midfield.

The Millers ace’s versatility might have proved ideal though and a player capable of playing in the No.8 role might be sought in January.

Forest’s midfielders at presence don’t really give them the platform to play 4-4-2 and that might be something for Hughton to address.

The new boss will likely go and add a couple more players during January and a player similar to Crooks could prove useful business.
