Former Celtic player Adam Virgo has made some bizarre comments suggesting Chris Hughton might try and take Shane Duffy to Nottingham Forest.
The centre-back has struggled to impose himself on the Hoops team and was largely unimpressive as a substitute in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Rangers.
Celtic trail their fierce rivals by 19 points at the Scottish Premiership summit and Duffy has flattered to deceive.
He earns £45,000-a-week at Parkhead but has started just one of the last eight Scottish Premiership contests.
His form has been erratic at best and Virgo doesn’t see a future for him at the Hoops.
He told BT Sport: “He looked a bag of nerves against Rangers. Unfortunately, he’s made too many mistakes which have led to goals.
“I don’t see Shane going back to Brighton because he won’t get in the side.
“Other clubs will take him in the Championship. I guarantee Chris Hughton, who had him at Brighton, would snap him up at Nottingham Forest.”
Has Virgo overlooked the Forest squad?
These comments from the ex-Brighton man are bizarre to say the very least.
Virgo has clearly not taken any interest in the players currently at Hughton’s disposal.
Joe Worrall is on the books and even if Forest sold him in January they would still have a plethora of options.
Scott McKenna and Loic Mbe Soh were added in the summer, whilst Tobias Figueiredo and Michael Dawson are still in place at the club.
Hughton has suggested that Forest won’t do a great deal of business this month – and adding a defender looks highly unlikely.
Duffy’s struggles at Celtic don’t exactly make him an attractive proposition for the Reds either.
He isn’t at the age where he is likely to get any better and he’s clearly struggling with a crisis of confidence.
Forest might look to add to their attacking options this month but Virgo is probably extremely wrong to ‘guarantee’ Hughton would have Duffy at the City Ground.
