Nottingham Forest have confirmed that on loan Olympiacos midfielder Cafu will be staying with the club on a permanent basis.

The 27-year-old was on a season-long loan from the Greek side and was signed in the summer by former Forest boss Sabri Lamouchi.

However, he has since become a favoured player by new Reds boss Chris Hughton, making 15 appearances and registering two assists, with Hughton recently branding him a ‘surprise package’ when speaking to Football League World.

What has made Cafu a very useful option for Forest is his versatility, with the Portuguese midfielder capable of playing as a number 10 and in a deeper midfield role.

However, what also works in Forest’s favour is that as Cafu is now their player, they are no longer capped by loan regulations.

Currently, the club have Cyrus Christie, Luke Freeman, James Garner, Filip Krovinovic and Anthony Knockaert on a temporary basis and you are only allowed to name five loanees in a match day squad.

Given Cafu was also at the club on a temporary basis, this would’ve meant someone would’ve had to drop out.

At present, that would be Freeman considering his fitness struggles, but the situation would’ve presented Hughton with a selection headache when everyone was fit.

This has now been rectified and it also suggests that Hughton wants Cafu to be a part of his summer rebuild.

Will Cafu prove to be a good permanent signing?
